2. First Impression vs. Final Feeling
- My first time reading this was quite the thrill, I had finished the first book and was pumped to continue Percy’s journey
- Working my way through it I was very impressed and finished the book keen to read the next instalment
3. What Happens?
The Sea of monsters picks up after the lightning thief. Percy has gotten more comfortable with his life as a demigod when he receives a dream message from his friend Grover, who has been captured by a cyclops. Not only has Grover been captured but the tree that protects camp halfblood has been poisoned and will die unless they can find the golden fleece. Percy learns that in order to save Grover and Camp halfblood he must traverse the sea of monsters, the only problem, he hasn’t been chosen for the quest.
4. The Good Stuff (Why I Rated It)
- Book 2 continues the development of the characters that was so crucial to the enjoyment of the first book.
- The book somewhat follows the journey of Odysseus in the Odyssey so those with some mythological understanding will really enjoy story.
- Phenomenal blend of mythological and modern. Riordan blends the two worlds in a seamless way that is quite believable.
5. The Not-So-Good Stuff
- Conflict wraps up quickly. Because it follows the path of Odysseus and there are many stops on the way it feels as if each dilemma is solved very quickly.
6. Who Should Read This?
- Perfect read if you enjoyed the first book.
- A great read for people that love mythology and want a new fresh adventure that draws from the Greek mythology.
7. The One-Sentence Summary
This book is in most aspects a modern retelling of the Odyssey.

- Overall: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (4 / 5)
Not my overall favourite entry in the Percy Jackson series but a great addition and definitely one I will reread and read to my kids.
