Review: Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief

1. Meet the Book

  • Title: Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief
  • Author: Rick Riordan
  • Genre: Fantasy/Greek Mythology

2. First Impression vs. Final Feeling

  • I first picked this book up all the way back in 2008 in grade 4. I was originally excited about reading the book as I had always enjoyed mythology.
  • When I finished it, I actually felt: I was hooked, great world building had me excited to continue reading and see where the story led.

3. What Happens? (No Spoilers Version)
Tell the story in 3–5 short sentences, like you’re explaining it to a friend at the counter:

  • Who’s the main character(s) Percy, the fun loving goofy main character. Annabeth, the brains of the operation. She keeps Percy from making incredibly stupid decisions. Grover, Percy’s best friend and guide.
  • What are they trying to do? The first book in the story has Percy, Annabeth and Grover as the attempt to find and retrieve the master bolt of Zeus

Percy is a troubled boy with no idea of his lineage. When he accidently vaporizes his math teacher he is thrown into a world of gods and monsters and must find a way to navigate this new world and rescue his mum. With new friends and new found powers Percy treks across America on a quest to return to find and return Zeus’ master lightning bolt.

4. The Good Stuff (Why I Rated It)
Pick 3 things you genuinely liked. Be specific and a bit cheeky if you want:

  • Rick Riordan takes on the big questions we have all asked, such as what would happen if you got a bunch of kids with ADHD all together and gave them weapons.
  • While being for younger audiences this book is very engaging and has some intriguing plot movements.
  • It is just a lot of fun to read. The characters are fun and interesting and the plot moves at a good pace to keep you engaged.

5. Who Should Read This?
This is a perfect series for any young teen looking for a good read. The series contains 5 books with a follow on series of another 5 so there is plenty of story to continue with once you get hooked.

6. The One-Sentence Summary

  • Percy Jackson and the lightning thief is a fun adventure about finding where belong, with plenty of twists and turns and characters you will come to love.

7. Rating (With Half Stars Allowed)

  • Overall: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (4)
  • I have reread this book many, many times over the years and will likely read it a few more.
